What can I expect at my first appointment?

I'll ask you some general questions around the issue that you are dealing with that has led to your desire to meet with a therapist.  I'll want to know something about your history so I'll ask you some questions about it.  You may come prepared with any questions that will help you understand how I work with my clients and the type of therapist you want to work with.

If I decide to continue working with you, how long will I expect to need therapy?

That all depends on the issues you are dealing with and how long you want to be in therapy.  After our second session, I will let you know my suggestions for how to proceed with achieving what you want out of therapy.  I will give an estimate of how long I think that may take.  We are complex beings:  sometimes we can heal quickly and sometimes things take longer to sort out.  Be aware that the amount of work and attention
you put into the therapeutic process will affect how quickly you may move forward.  If I give you a homework assignment and you do it, you will see changes more quickly.  Please also know that you have the right to stop meeting with me at any time.  This is about your success and at your pace.  If you decide you are finished or you want to work with someone else, it is your right and responsibility to do so.  I would ask that you consider meeting with me for a final session before moving on just to provide closure.

How long are the sessions and what is the fee?

Sessions are 50 minutes long and cost $80.  You may pay by cash or check.  I take credit cards and HSA or FSA cards as well.  With regard to how often sessions take place, it's up to you.  You may find that you want to meet once a week, twice a week, twice a month...whatever works for you.  There are some types of work, EMDR for instance, where 1 1/2 hour sessions are tremendously beneficial for accomplishing the most for your time.  I will give you that option when I think it is appropriate and you may request it at any time.

Do you take insurance?

No, not at this time.

Will what I share be kept private?

All of our conversations are completely confidential.  There are a few exceptions to this and they are in place for your safety and the safety of others.

What are your qualifications?

I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Counseling.  I am currently working toward my LPC.  I am registered with the State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies as an unlicensed psychotherapist.  This is required by law.  When I receive my LPC, I will then be registered as a licensed psychotherapist.

What do the titles (Psychologist, Psychotherapist, therapist...) and initials mean?
